1. Cal is lacking an offensive identity

Maybe this should be called, the Cal Bears need an offense. They have one of the best defensive units in the Pac-12 — if not the entire country. If their offense was average, the Bears would be contenders.

There just isn’t anything the Bears do offensively that scared the Ducks at all. They don’t have any dynamic playmakers on the perimeter or in the backfield. The Oregon defense squeezed the field against the Bears all night. The receivers couldn’t get separation and the running backs couldn’t find the second level.

The Cal Bears weren’t helped by the loss of Garbers in this game, but the Bears had no idea what they wanted to do offensively.

They led for the amount of time they did because Oregon played extremely sloppy in this game — more on that later. The offensive line got no push, and the Oregon Ducks did not respect Cal back up quarterback Devon Modster’s ability to throw the football. The Ducks’ defense continually gave their offense the ball because the Bears could not sustain drives at all tonight.
