1. The Ducks were sloppy

The Ducks survived tonight, but they didn’t play their best football. If Oregon wants to be considered among the nation’s elite, they have to play cleaner against stiff competition. They didn’t do that against Cal.

Oregon had their way with Cal’s defensive front in the first half. CJ Verdell left the game with an injury, and that didn’t stop the Oregon running game. However, the Ducks shot themselves in the foot all night long. They marched down to the red zone, and promptly threw an interception. They get the ball to the nine and Travis Dye fumbles. They get the ball into plus territory, and Dye fumbles again.

Then they missed a field goal before half time. The Ducks negated at least 17 points in the first half. They have to play with more discipline in big situations.

Saturday’s victory doesn’t absolve their sloppy play. The Ducks were fortunate they played a team with an anemic offense tonight. They plays several teams in the next month that have the talent to make you pay if you don’t take advantage of opportunities the way the Duck did. Several of those games to close the season won’t be at Autzen either; clean it up Ducks if you want to stay in the conversation.
