3. Texas Tech’s passing defense stepped up

The Red Raider offense played great but the defense came up big when it needed to. The first interception of the game came when Oklahoma State’s star freshman quarterback Spencer Sanders had his pass corralled by Damarcus Fields who returned it five yards to the Cowboys 33-yard line. Texas Tech was leading 13-0 at that point.

The second interception came when Douglas Coleman III returned an errant Sanders pass for four yards to the Oklahoma State 37-yard line. Texas Tech converted the turnover to points when it scored a touchdown to make it 20-0.

The Red Raiders were not done causing havoc to the Cowboys’ passing game when the most important defensive possession of the game came late in the fourth quarter as Oklahoma State had one last chance to attempt to make a late comeback. Coleman III had his second interception of game to seal the victory for Texas Tech.

On top of the interceptions, Texas Tech held Sanders to his lowest QBR of the season of 21.8.

The Texas Tech passing defense was not perfect but it greatly contributed to the victory over Oklahoma State.
