5. Appalachian State Mountaineers

  • vs. East Tennessee State (W 42-7)
  • vs. Charlotte (W 56-41)
  • at North Carolina (W 34-31)
  • vs. Coastal Carolina (W 56-37)
  • at Louisiana (W 17-7)

The Mountaineers of Appalachian State made their name known to the rest of the country in 2007 when, as a Division 1-AA team, went to Ann Arbor and beat then-No. 5 ranked Michigan.

In 2014, Appalachian State would become a FBS member and join the Sun Belt. The following year in 2015, Appalachian State beat Ohio 31–29 in the Camellia Bowl becoming the first team in Sun Belt history to accomplish winning 11 games in one season. The Mountaineers have won four bowls games and have been conference champs for three seasons.

Appalachian State has had success on the field but not many are aware of how consistently well they have played since becoming a FBS member five years ago.

The Mountaineers won 11 games last season with one of their two losses being in overtime on the road to Penn State. The momentum from last season has carried over to this season. This year, their most impressive win has been again against North Carolina on the road.

They did put up 34 or more points in each of their first four games showing that even with a new head coach, their offensive production has not missed a beat. They also have displayed the ability to step up their defense when need to as they lead Sun Belt rival Louisiana to only seven points on the road.

Appalachian State’s toughest remaining game on the schedule will be Nov. 9 as it travels to play SEC foe South Carolina.
