1. Notre Dame defense improving

At halftime, Notre Dame legend, Tim Brown talked with the NBC reporting crew about his takeaways from the first part of the game. He mentioned that he was surprise USC hadn’t taken any deep shots down field. Let me take you all a little deeper into what Tim Brown was trying to get at in this comment.

The USC wide receiving corps is the heart of the Trojan offense. Additionally, Michael Pittman Jr., USC’s top receiver stands at a massive 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds. Because Notre Dame’s secondary has been the weak point of their defense, both this year and in previous ones, it would have made sense that Clay Helton would have designed plays to test them.

Eventually, the Trojans did attempt to move the ball down field. But ultimately, this was not possible because of the pressure the defensive line put on Kedon Slovis.

Looking ahead at the Irish’s next game, the defense will need to play similarly as they take on the Michigan Wolverines. However, considering the struggles Shea Patterson has been having against high-quality opponents, Brian Kelly should feel confident in his defense.
