2. Mahone, Holani made their marks against Hawaii

It has been a weird first half of the 2019 season for Robert Mahone. The junior from Prosper, Texas racked up 142 yards and two touchdowns against Florida State to open the season, threatening to break out as one of the best running backs in the entire country. But that game proved an outlier as Mahone struggled to replicate the performance over the next four games as his output yo-yoed from week to week.

On Saturday night in Boise, the yo-yo continued as Mahone made his mark against the Rainbow Warriors. The back churned out 74 yards on 16 carries and found his way into the endzone for the Broncos. He added a five-yard reception to boost his statistics further.

But Mahone was not even the most versatile running back in the Boise State backfield on Saturday night. That honor belonged to George Holani, who stacked up three total touchdowns as he got a dozen touches over the course of the night. Holani carried the ball nine times for 64 yards and a rushing touchdown. Just as important, he caught three passes for 38 yards and a pair of passing scores.

At this point it looks like Holani might end up being the better threat of the two, but the Broncos have plenty of space in their playbook to utilize both backs. The more they produce from game to game, the better chance Boise State has to run the table.
