We knew this would be a big week for college football, but it still exceeded expectation. How’d it affect the Heisman Trophy power rankings?
We are yet another week into the college football season, and the race to be the best player is heating up. Everyone is stepping up another level with their play, and it shows in the Heisman Trophy power rankings.
We knew that this week would shake up the rankings. Oklahoma played against their bitter rival Texas, Alabama had their first true road game test against Texas A&M, and LSU played in the game of the week at night against Florida. This week might have not seen all the best teams play, but it was the perfect time for many players to have that Heisman moment. Did anyone take advantage of it?
Before we get to the actual rankings, let’s look at who just barely made the cut with our honorable mentions.
Honorable Mentions
Chase Young, EDGE, Ohio State
Ohio State did not play this week, but Chase Young is still the best defensive player in football. If we actually based this award on the best college football player, he would probably be in my rankings somewhere. However, there has only been one defensive player to ever win the Heisman. I love Chase Young, but the odds are against him.
Chuba Hubbard, RB, Oklahoma State
Chuba also did not get to play this week, but that won’t affect him making the honorable mentions list. He’s still one of the best running backs in college football. I just don’t know if he will be in enough big games to make it to New York. His only hope is for Oklahoma State to somehow upset Oklahoma in a game where Hubbard goes off.
J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State
It is insane to think that Ohio State actually has three Heisman candidates, but JK Dobbins has finally emerged as the star we all thought he was. There still remains one question: how will the trio of Young, Dobbins, and Justin Fields affect the voting? Will they steal votes from each other and make it harder for any of them to win? Perhaps. However, I think Dobbins and Young would not be stealing first-place votes from anyone.
