5. Oregon State 21, California 17

Oregon State (3-4) won three games total in the past two seasons and wasn’t expected to do much better entering this year. That narrative, however, is starting to change after a road win against the Golden Bears.

California stormed to a 4-0 start this year, beating then-No. 14 Washington and beating Ole Miss on the road. The Golden Bears have now lost three in a row and are searching for answers. The Beavers won their second Pac-12 game of 2019. As a program, Oregon State has won three or more games only once in the past five seasons.

4. BYU 28, No. 14 Boise State 25

Brigham Young entered this late-night Saturday game with a 2-4 record after a disappointing first half of the 2019 season. Boise State, on the other hand, had assumed the frontrunner position for the top Group of 5 team after a 6-0 start, a Top 15 national ranking, and two losses by the AAC’s Central Florida.

Saturday night of Week 8 changed all that. BYU, which led 28-10 entering the game’s final quarter, held on to win by three points against the Broncos. Quarterback Baylor Romney threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start.
