Appalachian State went on the road and did everything short of shutting out their Sun Belt opponent as they routed South Alabama 30-3 in early Saturday action on the Week 9 slate. The Mountaineers outgained their opponents by more than 300 yards when they had the football, as the App State defense held the Jaguars to just 139 total yards all game.

Zac Thomas didn’t have a huge game passing the ball, finishing 16-of-28 for 132 yards an a touchdown through the air. Thomas added 42 yards on the ground, while Raykwon Anderson and Marcus Williams Jr. each punched in a rushing touchdown. Chandler Staton connected on three of his four field-goal attempts, including a 46-yarder late in the third quarter for his longest of the day.

With everything else that transpired around the country, Appalachian State looks like a good bet to push up into the top 20 in this week’s AP Top 25. One October game remains for the Mountaineers, who return home to Boone for a Halloween battle against Georgia Southern. If they get past the Eagles, Eliah Drinkwitz’s team has a great shot at running the table and putting the Sun Belt in position for the conference’s first-ever major bowl appearance.
