2. Nittany Lions’ defense is elite

On the other side of the coin, perhaps Penn State does not need to have an out of this world offense. Their lock down defense is one of the best in the country.

We knew entering the game the Penn State defense has been spectacular this season. But against Michigan State their depth was tested at cornerback with both starter John Reid and reservist Trent Gordon going down to injuries. No big deal as freshman Marquis Wilson saw significant playing time including his first career interception and nearly had his second.

The defense as a whole is great, but the front seven is nearly unbeatable. They are allowing 9.6 points per game, good for second in the country. Opposing teams are averaging 68.4 yards on the ground, also good for second in the country.

Along with those eye popping numbers, the Lions have yet to give up a first quarter touchdown this season and have only allowed three points in the first frame. Michigan scored the most points on the Penn State defense this season when they scored 21 last week. Penn State’s other seven opponents have scored 13 or less.

Penn State still has four games left. They have depth in most places to keep fresh and build experience. They may just prove this year the old adage offense wins games, but defense wins championships.
