4. 2007 West Virginia Mountaineers

The 2007 West Virginia Mountaineers are surely one of the most talented teams to never play for a National Championship, but they still deployed one of the most feared offensive attacks in recent college football memory.

Before Rich Rodriguez bolted for Michigan, he built one of the best offenses in college football with the likes of Pat White and Steve Slaton. The duo combined for 2,386 yards and 31 touchdowns on the ground while leading the Mountaineers to an 11-2 record and a 48-28 fiesta Bowl victory over Oklahoma.

Owen Schmitt and Noel Devine also contributed in major ways offensively, the former mostly as a blocker and the latter a spell back for Slaton, but still — this team was electric. They averaged 39.6 points per game and, when featured in a video game, could attack a defense with any sort of playbook.

Imagine running a triple option with White, Slaton and Devine or Schmitt. Now spread the defense out and go five-wide and try to contain White in the tackle box. It’d be mayhem, much like facing him in real life was. Schmitt was the only senior of the bunch, too, so including this team wouldn’t mean just one season of fun.
