College football heats up with now six Group of Five teams ranked inside of the top 25. Who will be the next to fall in the Group of Five?
The college football season is slowly winding down as we enter the second half of the season. As we start to get a real feel for who the real contenders are in the Group of Five and the ones who have trailed off. There are now six Group of Five teams ranked in the top 25 and loads of competition fighting for the at large New Year’s Six position.
SMU has solidified itself as the top dog in the Group of Five, coming in at No. 15 in the last AP poll. The Mustangs will have one of the hardest matchups to get past this weekend going on the road to Memphis. The other notable teams that have made some noise in the Group of Five have been the undefeated Appalachian State, one loss Cincinnati, and Boise State. These teams will all wait in the wings for SMU to fall in order to jockey for a better position.
The American Athletic Conference has been the most frequented conference lobbying for the NY6 at large bid with three ranked teams in Week 10. One of the strongest teams in the conference, UCF, fell early but has looked great in the last three games. With three teams in the top 25, the AAC will have a tough time not beating up on each other en route to one of these big-money bowls.
We will see only one ranked Group of Five matchups this weekend but a couple of tricky spots for other teams. As we look forward to who could be on upset alert, it is important to note that all teams listed are favorites in their games except SMU.
