It’s a new week of college football, which means it’s time to have some new Heisman Trophy power rankings. Watch out for Chase Young.
College football has given us so many gifts in 2019. One of the many gifts has been the great Heisman race, and it’s shown in the fluctuation of the Heisman Trophy power rankings.
With another week in the tank, we’ve seen the emergence of plenty of stars, including one on defense that needs to be discussed more. Before we get to the rankings, let’s look at the honorable mentions from the week.
Honorable mentions
Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin
Jonathan Taylor was considered the best running back in college football going into the season, and his early season numbers supported that. He had his opportunity to make a statement against Ohio State, and he unfortunately had one of his worst performances. I wanted to give him credit, but I believe he is officially out of the Heisman race.
Chuba Hubbard, RB, Oklahoma State
I love Chuba as a running back both in college and as a prospect for the NFL. I just don’t think he’s doing enough groundbreaking things to earn this award. That’s no disrespect to him. There is just a whole new level of player you have to be to win the Heisman as a running back, and he hasn’t been dominant enough to do it.
Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
Justin Fields was right on the edge of my Heisman rankings currently as my sixth player. I love him, but I had to put his running back ahead of him. Their biggest game of the season to date was against Wisconsin, and Fields did not have the best day. With other top quarterbacks still in the race with bigger games left on the schedule, I see little hope that Fields makes it back to the forefront. I think he’s a great contender for next year, though.
