Kansas State Football: 3 takeaways from Governor’s Cup win over Kansas

1. Les Miles has a lot of work left
We know that the Kansas Jayhawks were a mess coming into this season and Les Miles has had a tall task in front of him. When he took the job in Lawrence, the Jayhawks had only 53 scholarship players on their roster. It’s obvious they lack depth.
However, they’ve played well most of the season this year. They play hard for Miles and give maximum effort, but there are times where they run out of gas. This game was indicative of this.
Their offense lacks an explosive playmaker. Pooka Williams is a solid running back, but there isn’t much around him. Carter Stanley is a solid quarterback, but you can only scheme so much when you aren’t able to push the ball down the field. They tried to keep this one close, but the offense succumbed to the pressure defense of the Wildcats and kept punting.
Without much offensive output, the Jayhawks’ defense ran out of gas and could do nothing with the Wildcats’ power running game.
Miles has done well to get three wins this season, but it’s obvious they have miles to go before they are competitive weekly in the Big 12.
