Oklahoma State Football: 3 overreactions to Week 10 win over TCU
By John Scimeca
2. Can Dillon Stoner step up as the alpha wideout?
After news broke about Wallace’s injury late last week, the obvious question echoed through the OSU fanbase: who was going to step up to fill Wallace’s large shoes?
On this Week 10 Saturday afternoon, that wideout was Dillon Stoner. The former Jenks High School standout has largely been the sure-handed safety valve receiver for OSU’s offense, grabbing a 12 or 16-yard catch across the middle of the defense while Wallace and Hubbard busted the biggest plays. He’s also been a dependable punt returner for the Cowboys.
With the spotlight on him against TCU, Stoner stepped up big. The 6-foot junior caught his first two touchdown catches of the season against the Horned Frogs. He now has 28 catches for 325 yards in 2019. Surprisingly, he only totaled three catches on Saturday afternoon, two of which were scores.
The jury is out as to whether Stoner can continue to fill the role of OSU’s leading wideout. The majority of OSU’s damage against TCU was done on the ground, whether it was Hubbard breaking into the open field or Sanders scrambling for big gains.
If OSU is continue its winning streak, Stoner and the rest of the receiving corps will have to adjust to Wallace’s absence.
