College football’s top teams were off, but there was plenty of action in Week 10. Let’s recap the best upsets, starting with No. 6 Florida’s loss.

OK, maybe it was the first weekend since 1996 that the No. 1, 2, and 3-ranked teams were on a bye week. With No. 5 Penn State sitting out and No. 4 Clemson hosting Wofford, why bother watching college football at all during a ho-hum Week 10 slate of games?

Anyone with this attitude missed out on some great drama and some more nuanced implications for the College Football Playoff from Week 10’s contests. It was the final round of games before Tuesday night’s important announcement, the first CFP poll. Its assessment of the Top 25 teams will be closely followed for the rest of this year’s season.

For example, will Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson have quality wins on their regular-season résumés? Cincinnati (lost to Ohio State) barely edged East Carolina, 46-43, and is still ranked No. 17. Oklahoma State (plays OU) lost its star wide receiver but held off TCU, 34-27, and is now five spots out of the AP Top 25. No. 22 Wake Forest (plays Clemson) drilled N.C. State, 44-10.

The race for the best Group of Five team got more interesting after this weekend, too. Two previously unbeaten teams fall from the unbeaten ranks, as No. 25 Memphis topped No. 15 SMU, 54-48, and Georgia Southern beat No. 20 Appalachian State on Thursday night.
