2. Shane Buechele held his own in the battle of quarterbacks

Holton Ahlers certainly had a huge game through the air, but SMU quarterback Shane Buechele was hardly hot garbage when the Mustangs had the football. The former Texas quarterback continued to make his mark in Dallas, as he played a critical role in the Mustangs’ advancement to 9-1 in the standings.

Buechele threw for 414 yards on 33-of-46 passing. The quarterback did throw one interception, but he made up for it with five touchdowns through the air. On a day when SMU needed all the offense they could possibly muster, Buechele was up to the task as he threw the ball frequently and prolifically.

Two different receivers, James Proche and Kylen Granson, each went off for more than 100 receiving yards. Proche had 167 yards and two touchdowns on 14 catches, while Granson turned seven receptions into 138 yards and three scores. Even with Reggie Roberson Jr. injured on the sidelines, the receiving corps proved capable of breaking through and making plenty of noise thanks to the crisp passing of Buechele.

It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but thanks to Buechele’s able passing it was nevertheless a winning day for the Mustangs. As they continue to press toward a New Year’s Six berth that is still an achievable goal, they will need Buechele to continue playing at an elite level against their remaining regular-season opponents.
