Boise State Football: 3 takeaways from overtime win over Wyoming
By Zach Bigalke
1. John Hightower was a jack-of-all-trades
John Hightower did a little bit of everything for Boise State as they struggled to do much on offense against Wyoming on Saturday evening at home. The wide receiver’s all-around contribution was pivotal to the Broncos forcing overtime against the Pokes, and he ended up producing a plurality of Boise State’s yardage.
Hightower ran for 38 yards, leading the Broncos in rushing yards despite getting only two carries over the course of the contest. When he was playing at his natural position, Hightower snagged two of Chase Cord’s passes for 46 yards through the air. From scrimmage, he finished with 84 yards as Boise State’s top offensive gainer at the skill positions.
But that was hardly Hightower’s only contribution to the Boise State effort on Saturday night. He is also the primary kickoff return man, and Hightower lived up to the billing. He took three kickoffs into the open field, gaining 61 return yards in the process.
With a versatile weapon like Hightower, Boise State can do a lot of things. Getting him even more involved in the offensive game plan is critical for the Broncos as they move further into November hoping to keep their New Year’s Six dreams alive to December and beyond.
