5. Illinois 37, Michigan State 34

This game encapsulated the different directions in which these two programs are moving. The Fighting Illini orchestrated a 27-point comeback to beat the Spartans. The victory gives head coach Lovie Smith’s Illinois team its sixth win of the season, the first time that the program is bowl-eligible since 2014.

The Illini scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to pull off the win. Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke struggled, completing 19-of-36 passes for one touchdown and three interceptions. The Spartans, who fell to 4-5 with the loss, are now at risk of suffering their first losing season since 2016.

4. Virginia Tech 36, No. 19 Wake Forest 17

In a game in which Virginia Tech honored longtime defensive coordinator Bud Foster, another shakeup of the ACC standings occurred. With a result like this, the odds become more and more likely that Clemson will not have faced a single ranked team before perhaps qualifying for the College Football Playoff. The defending national champions meet the Demon Deacons in Week 12.

Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker totaled 311 yards passing and rushing in the win, including one touchdown on the ground. While the loss was only Wake Forest’s second of the season, the Hokies improved to 6-3 (3-2 ACC).
