College Football Playoff Rankings 2019: Projected Top 25, Week 13
By Zach Bigalke
The College Football Playoff selection committee was skeptical about Minnesota, putting them at No. 17 in their first set of rankings before bumping the Golden Gophers up to No. 8 after they took down Penn State in Week 11. After losing the Floyd of Rosedale battle against No. 20 Iowa on the road this week, though, Minnesota is going to fall back down into the teens of the committee’s Top 25 when it comes out again on Tuesday.
Tanner Morgan had a big day in defeat, throwing for 368 yards on 25-of-36 passing. But he threw just one touchdown pass as Iowa tightened up in the red zone, forcing them to settle too frequently for Brock Walker field goals. When they had a chance to come back at the end, it was not Morgan but rather Cole Kramer in the game after a hard hit to the starter. Kramer promptly threw an interception on his second snap to end the game.
No longer among the ranks of the unbeaten, it will be interesting to see how the committee handles a one-loss Golden Gophers team vis-à-vis where they put the Iowa team that just beat them but that also has two more losses. Considering how underwhelmed the committee was by Minnesota’s resume before the Penn State win, they will probably drop them below the Hawkeyes right back around No. 17.
