College Football Playoff Rankings 2019: Projected Top 25, Week 14 – Utah sneaks in
By Zach Bigalke
With their win over No. 25 SMU, Navy will get a long look from the College Football Playoff selection committee this week when they deliberate over their Top 25 rankings. The Midshipmen downed the Mustangs 35-28 in Annapolis to keep themselves alive for a shot at the AAC crown. Now they need a win at Houston and a Memphis loss against Cincinnati next weekend to get into the conference title game.
Malcolm Perry threw for 162 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-15 passing, and the quarterback added 195 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as the engine of the triple-option attack. The Midshipmen finished with 378 yards on the ground to fortify their position as the top rushing offense in the country. The Navy defense held Shane Buechele to only two passing touchdowns and 251 yards through the air, and Xavier Jones managed to gut out only 61 rushing yards.
Navy presents an interesting conundrum for the selection committee if they happen to get into the AAC championship and win the league. With the annual Army-Navy Game still on the schedule during Heisman weekend, the selectors will either have to decide on incomplete information whether the Midshipmen are the top Group of Five champion or punt the decision down the road until the service academy showdown in Philadelphia.
