College Football Playoff Rankings 2019: Projected Top 25, Week 14 – Utah sneaks in
By Zach Bigalke
Memphis knew they had to keep winning to stay atop the AAC West and in the Group of Five hunt for the trip to the Cotton Bowl. The Tigers did just that on Saturday afternoon in Tampa, trouncing South Florida 49-10 on the road to claim their 10th win of the 2019 season and stay ahead of Navy on the strength of their head-to-head tiebreaker.
Brady White threw two interceptions, but he also tossed two touchdown strikes and threw for 222 yards as he went 18-of-28 passing. Kenneth Gainwell led the team in rushing, churning out 128 yards on 14 carries, but Patrick Taylor Jr. stole the show with 95 yards and three rushing touchdowns along with a 20-yard reception as he returns to full health. Gainwell and Taylor give the Tigers a backfield to rival Taylor’s 2018 contributions with Darrell Henderson and Tony Pollard.
Now the big test comes for Memphis. The Tigers head back home to prepare for a Black Friday showdown against Cincinnati in a battle of AAC division leaders on the final long weekend after Thanksgiving. A win sets up the Tigers for an instant rematch against the Bearcats on the same field a week later; a loss hands the division to the Midshipmen despite the head-to-head win.
