The long Thanksgiving weekend concluded regular season play in Week 14. How will all the results impact the penultimate College Football Playoff Top 25?
Rivalry weekend always offers up the opportunity for a final surprise or two before the conclusion of the regular season. With attention about to turn to championship weekend, let’s look first at how all the results of the long Thanksgiving weekend will impact the next College Football Playoff Top 25 that will be released by the selection committee on Tuesday ahead of a weekend of conference title games.
The biggest result with the widest impact came in the Iron Bowl. Sitting at No. 5 entering the final weekend of November, Alabama had a real chance to return to the College Football Playoff for a sixth straight season after previously making the field without winning a conference or even a division championship. That dream died, however, as No. 15 Auburn took down their rival in another instant classic in their rivalry series.
Further north in Minneapolis, another matchup of top-15 teams decided the Big Ten West as No. 12 Wisconsin toppled No. 8 Minnesota in a blowout for Paul Bunyan’s Axe.
All three of the teams that entered Week 14 with perfect records escaped with zeroes still showing in the loss column. Ohio State blew out No. 13 Michigan on the road, while LSU routed Texas A&M and Clemson crushed South Carolina.
