3. The Future for Jalen Hurts

When Jalen Hurts announced that he would be transferring from Alabama to Oklahoma to play for Lincoln Riley, he instantly became a favorite to win the 2019 Heisman Trophy. Frankly, he’s having a Heisman year. He has more passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, and total touchdowns at this point in the season than either Kyler Murray or Baker Mayfield did during their Heisman campaigns.

Unfortunately, because of the tremendous season that LSU’s Joe Burrow is having, and Oklahoma didn’t have a perfect season, Hurts is unlikely to win the trophy.

Hurts will be entering the NFL Draft this upcoming spring, but where he will be selected is truly unpredictable. On one hand, Hurts is a winner, who has done it with multiple teams for multiple years. On the other, his ability to throw the deep ball is still in grave doubt. And, without being a long-ball threat, it will be difficult for him to be a successful NFL quarterback.

He should probably just workout as a wide receiver at the NFL Combine — not.

NFL offenses are rapidly evolving with the emergence of Lamar Jackson’s dominance and the success he’s had this season. Many teams will be looking for a strong running quarterback who can make good decisions, both inside and out of the pocket, and Hurts is exactly that. He will be seen as a young Cam Newton and will be given a shot by someone.
