1. LSU (13-0)

The SEC Championship Game promised to be the tightest of all the title games this weekend. With the second ranked LSU Tigers taking on the fourth ranked Georgia Bulldogs, there was no matchup featuring such highly ranked teams. It was the might of the Tigers offense, versus one of the best defenses in the nation, with a little Jake Fromm and D’Andre Swift thrown into the mix.

Georgia needed the win to get into the College Football Playoff and that alone was enough to suggest a close fought game.

LSU are too good for that. If they aren’t the number one ranked team this afternoon then the selection committee needs to have a good, hard look at itself.

If there was any doubt over Joe Burrow’s Heisman candidacy (there wasn’t) then they were put to bed with a dominant display in the biggest game of his football career, so far. He threw for four touchdowns and 349 yards on the way to a 37-10 win.

It was another offensive masterclass from Burrow, under the play-calling of offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

On the other side of the ball, the LSU defense shut down the Georgia offense, particularly the run game, with Brian Herrien labouring to 24 rushing yards. Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm wasn’t immune from the bite of the Tigers defense, suffering an ankle injury after a ferocious challenge from Grant Delpit. Derek Stingley Jr showed the future in Baton Rouge is bright with two interceptions.

Last week, the defense put on a show but it was cast aside as “just being against Texas A&M”.

That accusation can’t be leveled at them this time around.

This LSU team is, without doubt, the best all-round team in the nation.
