1. The future of college football collides in the Fiesta Bowl

Everyone loves a quarterback rivalry. Generations in the NFL are defined by them. Brady versus Manning was the rivalry that defined a decade. Although College Football careers have a far shorter lifespan, there too can be rivalries.

The Fiesta Bowl gives us the first opportunity to see two faces of the sport go head to head.

Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields may not ever step foot on the field at the same time, but be under no illusion, this is the battle of the Fiesta Bowl.

It’s been an interesting season for Lawrence. The poster boy of Clemson football, with his hair flowing gloriously in the wind, was destined for greatness in 2019 after his phenomenal freshman campaign.

After a faltering start, the swirling rumors of a sophomore slump threatened to engulf him and the Tigers. However, since the game against UNC, he has looked every bit the complete prospect that had NFL GM’s circling the 2021 NFL Draft eagerly.

He finished the regular season with over 3000 passing yards, over 30 passing touchdowns, and just eight interceptions.

He performed on the big stage less than 12 months ago, now he has to perform under pressure from Chase Young, and with Arnette and Okudah draped all over his wide receivers.

Across from him in the Fiesta Bowl, Justin Fields had very different expectations entering 2019.

The transfer from Georgia was tasked with replacing first round NFL Draft pick, Dwayne Haskins, for Ohio State. Questions over his ability to fit the program, to perform on the big stage, to lead a team, hung over him.

Fields play this season has been mesmeric. Whether it’s been making deep throws down field or moving the chains with his athleticism and elusiveness, Fields has been up to the task. At times it’s been difficult to remember that this is his first year as a starting quarterback.

Nothing could better sum up the leadership that he’s shown better than against Michigan. Despite suffering what looked like a serious knee injury, Fields bounced back out of the medical tent and delivered a sublime touchdown toss.

We’re going to be treated to two explosive quarterbacks in the Fiesta Bowl.
