2. The rise of Malcolm Perry

It’s fitting Malcolm Perry didn’t throw any passes in this game. Last season, he saw time at quarterback, halfback and slot receiver. It was as if the Navy coaching staff wasn’t completely sold on Perry at quarterback since he split time with Zach Abey last season.

This season has been completely different.

This season, Perry has taken the reigns and even with new wrinkles in the offense he looks comfortable behind center in a way he didn’t last year.

This season, with changes to the staff, Perry has responded. New wrinkles, no problem. He’s had one of the most prolific seasons in Navy history. He joins quarterbacks like Ricky Dobbs, Keenan Renyolds and Heisman Trophy winner Roger Stabauch in the pantheon of great Navy quarterbacks.

Perry had his way in this game as he ran for over 300 yards. There was no one on Army’s defense that could catch Perry in the open field. The Navy offensive staff did a fantastic job of scheming ways to open lanes for Perry. One way they did this was running Perry out of the shot gun in spread formations. This season was the culmination of growth and hard work by Perry.
