5. Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl: Buffalo vs. Charlotte

This probably isn’t everybody’s idea of a top five most watchable game but hear me out.

Firstly, it’s the first one of the College Football bowl season, and what’s more exciting than football when you’ve not had any Tuesday night MACtion to fill the void between Saturdays?

Secondly, before a ball is kicked, thrown, or run up the gut, there’s an incredible back story for one of the two contestants.

For the Charlotte 49ers, this is their first trip to a bowl. Amongst the spate of players skipping bowls, there is a claim that the entire existence of the bowl system is pointless.

Try telling that to head coach Will Healy and his 49ers team.

The program has only been in existence since 2013 and has only been bowl eligible since 2015.

This game means something to these players, and that makes it more watchable.

It’s also worth watching for Jaret Patterson.

The Buffalo running back is one of the most underrated rushers in the nation. His 1,626 rushing yards make him the fifth-ranked running back in 2019. More impressively, he’s the second ranked sophomore running back behind Chuba Hubbard.

After losing Tyree Jackson to the NFL last year, the Buffalo offense has reverted to the ground and they’re a top 10 ranked rushing offense.

The 49ers are no slouches in the ground game either, with Benny LeMay leading the way for the 24th-ranked rushing offense.

The game will come down to who can halt the run, and unfortunately for the 49ers the Bulls have the fourth-ranked rushing defense.

If the 49ers can overcome that, there’ll be a bigger party than the one they threw when they became bowl eligible.

So, grab a beer, or a coke, and settle down for the first game of the holiday period.
