Miami Football: 3 takeaways from Independence Bowl loss to Louisiana Tech
By Zach Bigalke
1. Who will be the Miami quarterback in 2020?
As mentioned earlier, Miami played three quarterbacks in the shutout loss to Louisiana Tech at the Independence Bowl. None of the three inspired any high measure of confidence, though that is as much on the offensive staff setting them up to fail as it is a matter of the players being inherently incapable of performing.
Jarren Williams got the bulk of the snaps, starting the game on the field and racking up only 94 yards and an interception on 9-of-20 passing. Williams added 14 yards on a half-dozen carries. N’Kosi Perry got his chances on the field as well, completing five of his 13 passing attempts for 52 yards as he also threw a pick.
Tate Martell, the Ohio State transfer, had one drive where he ran five times for five yards and completed his only pass for seven yards. That was ultimately the only pass the former Buckeye threw for the Hurricanes all season long, raising questions as to why the staff even opted to bring in a player of obvious talent like Martell if they had no intention of utilizing those talents.
Perry and Martell will be redshirt juniors next season, while Williams will be a redshirt sophomore and effectively the incumbent. That incumbency means little, though, under a new coaching staff.
Who Miami eventually settles on as the coordinator this offseason will go a long way toward determining which quarterback will get the bulk of the snaps for the Hurricanes in 2020. None inspired much confidence in the Independence Bowl, though as has been the case for much of the year Martell did not get much opportunity to showcase his skills.
