Michigan State Football: 3 takeaways from win over Wake Forest

3. Brian Lewerke had an overall solid game
Brian Lewerke has been much maligned his entire Michigan State career. Some of it warranted. He’s a streaky, erratic thrower that makes poor decisions way too often. For many Spartans fans, Lewerke never lived up to the promise he was to fulfill. He was expected to be the second coming to lead the Spartans back to where Michigan State legend Connor Cook got them: the College Football Playoff.
That’s all water under the bridge now, he’s a senior and has played his last game and what a last game he had. He completed 70 percent of his passes for over 300 yards and a touchdown. He marched them down the field for a potential game-clinching field goal, but kicker Matt Coghlin missed a chi-shot.
This game was the perfect metaphor for Lewerke’s career. He was erratic early and threw an interception midway through the game. In the second half, Lewerke got hot throwing a lot of quick passes, and kept the chains moving.
Although the Spartans only scored seven points in the second half Lewerke kept the Wake Forest offense off the field and his defense fresh against the Demon Deacon tempo.
