Monday morning college football thoughts

  • Jan. 13 will be the most important Tiger Bowl in the history of Tiger Bowls.
  • In the intro of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, ESPN compared the 2019 version to the 1946 “Game of the Century” between Notre Dame and Army.
    • Michigan State’s victory over Wake Forest was a good one, but not that good.
  • Yes, it was Temple, but UNC still looked amazing in the Military Bowl. Prepare for the offseason hype (that I bought into last week).
  • USC’s loss to Iowa is a new rock-bottom for the program.
    • The most the Hawkeyes had scored in 2019 against a Power Five opponent before the Holiday Bowl was 30. That was against Rutgers, so the next highest was 27 against Nebraska. Trojan fans everywhere are rejoicing that Clancy Pendergast has been fired.
  • At least the Trojans can start fresh in 2020.
    • Well, they start the season with Alabama who is fresh off a year that they did not make the College Football Playoff and who is possibly starting a five-star true freshman from Los Angeles who publicly said he wanted to attend USC as a kid. They also have five of their nine Pac-12 games on the road — 2020 is going to be a rough year.
  • The Cheez-It Bowl was everything I thought it would be.
  • Bring on the full slate of games on New Year’s Day.
  • The National Championship is going to be better than people think it will be.
    • LSU is not going to blow out Clemson. I can almost promise. The Tigers (LSU that is) have a fantastic chance of winning, but it will be nothing relatively close to what it was like against Oklahoma.
  • Good luck to WKU-WMU on following up a great Saturday of college football.
  • What a career Jalen Hurts had.
    • It will be difficult for anyone to have a better story than he did. Transferring from Alabama to Oklahoma and leading them the playoff. It did not end in the fairy tale way we all thought, but it was still one hell of a four-year run.
