Michigan State Football: What’s next after disappointing 2019 season?
By Ryan Kay
Optimism among the program
But like the last two seasons, Michigan State has brought back many starters from the previous season and failed to compete for a division title in both instances. The expectations and aspirations with all of those returning players were to compete for championships and they failed to rise up to those high but responsible standards.
Now without all of the returning starters coming back for next season, how will Michigan State compete for a Big Ten title? There is some hope but it depends on who stays and who goes.
A talented kid like receiver Cody White has not 100 percent declared that he is coming back but it’s likely he will as he’s projected to be a late-round draft pick.
The offense will return some playmakers on offense in running backs Elijah Collins and Anthony Williams Jr. as well as receivers Jalen Nailor, Julian Barnett, Trenton Gillison and Tre Mosley. They also have some young and talented offensive linemen coming back as well as some veteran linemen returning next season.
However, they have three returning scholarship quarterbacks competing for the starting position this spring and maybe a clear starter emerges before fall camp but that’s unlikely. The young Spartans are optimistic on social media about next season.
Enthusiasm, faith, and having high expectations are great to hear from players but the Spartan faithful from season ticket holders to alums to those fans who dedicate their Saturdays in the fall to Michigan State football are expecting big things from their football program in 2020.
Dantonio is hoping to complete the circle and bounce back in 2020 as the 2013 team did after a disappointing 2012 season.
No one can predict the future and there are many unknowns moving forward but there’s optimism among those in the football program that reside in East Lansing and only time will tell.
