3. Utah showed a lack of discipline

If there’s anything that hurt the Utah Utes this season, it’s been the utter lack of discipline they’ve played with at times.

First, they played poorly against USC. They had 16 penalties for 120 yards in this game, and had issues with safety help all night despite playing against an air-raid offense. Then there was the Pac-12 title game. The Utes executed and played as poorly as they played all season.

Tonight was a combination of both the USC game and the Pac-12 Championship. They had seven penalties tonight, and the penalties they had couldn’t come at a worse time. Some of the penalties were inside plus territory on offense, and silly penalties like the cheap shot on Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger. The Longhorns were beat to the punch all night last night as well. Utah missed blocks offensively and missed assignments defensively.

What was most puzzling was Utah was supposed to be the more physical team at the point of attack, but Texas ruled the line of scrimmage. The did everything better than Utah on Tuesday night.
