Texas Football: 3 takeaways from Alamo Bowl win over Utah

2. No coordinators, no problem
After a 7-5 season, Texas head coach Tom Herman fired both offensive coordinator Tim Beck and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. Their woes this season has as much to do with injuries as it did scheme, but coordinators are usually the scapegoats for a poor season.
Herman put together the offensive game plan and safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Craig Naviar put together the defensive game plan.
This proved not to be an issue for the Longhorns on either side of the ball. The Longhorns racked up 438 yards of total offense. Texas, who had issues with the running back position all season, rand for 231 yards at over six yards per carry. Tom Herman had his offensive line ready to play. They dominated what many considered to be one of the top defensive lines in college football.
Defensively, the Longhorns handled the vaunted Utah power running attack. The Longhorns handled Utes running back Zack Moss who only had 57 rushing yards on the night. Quarterback Tyler Huntley had no time to throw at all in this game. He was sacked five times by the Longhorns’ defense.
Who says you need coordinators to win a football game?
