Despite Matt Rhule’s success at Baylor, the safe play is to hire someone who knows the Big 12 and recruit the state of Texas. Josh Heupel checks all of those boxes.

Not only was Heupel a standout quarterback on Oklahoma’s 2000 national championship team, but he was also an assistant coach for the Sooners from 2006-14. Much of what you see his current team do offensively and defensively in Orlando at Central Florida is similar to what you see at Baylor.

The Central Florida Knights run a wide-open spread offense with some quarterback run concepts. They love to be aggressive getting the ball downfield off of play-action. The Knights also run an aggressive defense very similar to the Bears. If Heupel goes to Waco, there wouldn’t be much difference in terms of offensive and defensive philosophy between what Rhule did and what he likes to do.

The question for Heupel would be: Is the Baylor job ‘big’ enough to give up a really cushy situation at Central Florida?
