6. Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon

Los Angeles desperately needs a quarterback for next season. There is no denying that. The question is where they choose to go to get one.

They could re-sign Phillip Rivers as a way to bridge the gap between present and future, but that doesn’t appear to be incredibly likely. They could look at the market and consider signing/trading for Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton, or even Tom Brady, but that would suggest that they are ready to win now, and I don’t think that is the case.

Let me say that I am not a huge Justin Herbert fan. I think fit will matter a lot in terms of how successful he is in the NFL. He has the traits, but I question his consistency and leadership. We’ve also seen flashy Oregon quarterbacks not perform to the expectation in recent drafts. That being said, I will not be in this draft room.

Perhaps the Chargers see something in Herbert that I don’t. Even if that is not the case, there are plenty of opportunities for Herbert to improve before April. His next chance to show off what he’s got is at the Senior Bowl. It will be vital for him to gel well with the other players and show exactly who he is off the field.
