3. Syracuse’s young, inefficient offensive line

The Orange knew they needed to replace much their impact players, primarily on the offensive line. They needed to replace two offensive tackles, who started a majority of last season. This past season, youth played a huge factor in the inconsistencies of an offense that was only ranked 69th in points per game (28.3) and 72nd in total yards accounted for per game (394.6).

The offense for the Orange occurred many situations where they couldn’t continue drives for scores because of their inability to contain the pass rush. The offensive line for the Orange gave up 50 sacks through the 12 games of the season which is the fourth highest in the nation.

The poor performance of the offensive line couldn’t create a stable running game as they were ranked 72nd in the nation in rushing yards per game (154).

Overall, the Orange were only able to convert 37.7 percent for a first-down on third-down conversions. Tommy DeVito was given a lot of hype before the season as the new starting quarterback after playing in four games last season. They were times where DeVito could rarely create drives because the offensive line could not give him time to read the defense.
