1. The great arms race

College football is the great arms race. If the NFL is NASCAR — meant to put teams on an equal playing field with revenue — college football is Indy Car — he who has the most wins.

Yes, the Spartans look up to Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan. For a five-year period, they were competing and winning against those teams — even against Ohio State. Recently, the Spartans have fallen behind the top three in the Big Ten East. After a 10-win 2017, the Spartans are 14-13 the last two seasons.

The Mel Tucker hire is a message that says we aren’t going to fall further behind the Buckeyes, Nittany Lions and Wolverines. In this arms race, the Spartans need someone who can keep up with recruiting.

It’s not going to be easy to beat James Franklin and Brian Hartline on the trail, but Mel Tucker is every bit the recruiter they are and will compete with them. The Spartans have a player development culture already in place, and that will be enhanced with Tucker’s prowess as a recruiter.

The Spartans might not win a national championship in the next five years, but Tucker will continue the sustained success and definitely enhance recruiting in East Lansing.
