Every year, the sport of College Football has been impacted heavily by transfer quarterbacks. For three straight seasons, transfer quarterbacks such as Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Joe Burrow have won the Heisman Trophy and either appeared in the College Football Playoff or won the national title.

While Jamie Newman isn’t technically part of the 2020 class, he’s still a new signee for the Bulldogs thanks to the transfer portal.

Newman is already projected to win the starting quarterback position after Jake Fromm left early for the 2020 NFL Draft. He comes in as a graduate transfer from Wake Forest after three seasons with the program. Last season for Demon Deacons, he passed 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions on 220 completions (out of 361 attempts). The Demon Deacons went 8-5 last season, which is good for a mid-level program in the same division as Boston College, Florida State and Clemson.

Newman’s transfer comes at a convenient time for the Bulldogs as they need a more productive and consistent passer for the young but experienced receiver corps they have. Last season, the Bulldogs ranked 72nd in passing yards per game (223 yards per game). The Bulldogs return three of their top four receivers from last season.

The SEC has recently turned into a conference that favors high-power offenses. While teams like Alabama and LSU have done well being efficient in the rushing game and passing game, the Bulldogs have only been highly explosive in the run game.

Having Newman at quarterback could create a spark for a high-power passing offense for the Bulldogs. Expect Newman to be one of the late-season bloomers in College Football much like Mayfield, Murray and Burrow were.
