Words could not express how we felt pulling the ROY bus into Chapel Hill.

We were going to see the man, the myth, the legend, the greatest player in North Carolina history “Mr. One Possession Win” Sam Howell. Unfortunately, he had ancient Sri Lankan history class so we missed him, but what we were impressed by was the haul brought in by veteran head coach Mack Brown. He hauled in a top 20 class which included an incredible 14 players from North Carolina. Brown wanted to fence in the state and he did. Those 14 players included two of the top 10 players in the state.

So what do you do when you have a young team and a young promising quarterback? You find him receivers to throw the ball, and that is exactly how the North Carolina recruiting staff went about their business.

In fact, they went heavy at the receiver position signing seven recruits. This makes for a crowded, yet competitive wide receiver room. They recruited a lot of size, but speed is the name of the game.

That’s why four-star receiver Josh Downs will have a huge impact on the field for the Tar Heels next season. He’s not very big and will need to add some size, but downs can flat fly. He evokes memories of Roscoe Parrish or Rondale Moore for the really old school.

Even if he doesn’t contribute heavily in the way of receptions — though he probably will — he’ll instantly make a difference in the return game. Downs is elusive in addition to being a speedster. He does a great job of tracking and high pointing the ball for someone his size.
