South Carolina Football: 3 biggest disappointments from 2019 season
1. Coaching staff
The biggest disappointment of the season came from those who are paid the high dollars to teach the young men and lead them to victories, not defeat following defeat.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment from the coaching staff was the strength and conditioning team. South Carolina was unable to overcome the weekly injuries to the core members of the team and by the end of the season almost every starting member had an injury at one time or another.
There was much speculation surrounding head coach Will Muschamp’s future at South Carolina and despite many rumors regarding his termination and contract buyout, the head coach remained in his position. However, all but three coaches were replaced or given different duties as part of the coaching staff changes. The coaches include Thomas Brown, John Scott Jr., Coleman Hutzler and Dan Werner.
The most notable change in the coaching staff is offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon was assigned to the wide receivers and Mike Bobo was named the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Bobo brought new tight ends coach, Joe Cox with him from Colorado State while Tracy Rocker and Rod Wilson, a former Gamecocks player, were also added to the staff.
South Carolina will begin spring practice session on Feb. 26 in preparation for the new season, and only time will tell if the coaching changes are what the team needed. In the meantime, Gamecocks faithful will be happy to close the book on 2019 season and look forward to the next chapter in the football program.
