2. Ability to anticipate a receiver’s break and read coverages

Jake Luton, who has had plenty of experience in a college setting, had a good rapport with his receivers as his ability to anticipate the route and read a defense was evident his senior year. The experience he has had being in a college environment I would imagine helped lead to this ability.

Yes, Luton has a good arm and has plenty of size as he stands at 6-foot-7, but those traits about him would be pointless if he couldn’t read coverages and go through his progressions. There are a lot of traits that help a quarterback take care of the ball and anticipating a receivers route by reading a defense is one of the main traits.

Fast forward to the 5:39-mark of the clip below. Luton recognizes that he has man at the goal, as is common in most defenses. Even though the corner at the top of the screen has outside leverage, Luton’s receiver is still able to get open with a nice move. Luton has trust in his receiver and the ball is out before his receiver even turns around, leading to a touchdown and helping Oregon State get a big win.

While this clip seems small and basic, it is a bunch of little things done right that leads to this touchdown.
