Oregon State Football: 3 reasons to pick Jake Luton in 2020 NFL Draft
1. Played in multiple personnel packages
Oregon State’s offense was a fun, creative one to watch. Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith has the Beavers’ offense and team in general heading into the right direction. However, his offense was able to bring out the best in Luton as he proved to be able to make every throw he needed to make.
Regardless if they were in gun or under center, in 12 personnel or empty, Luton was able to recognize where the ball needed to go.
NFL scouts look for quarterbacks that have experience in different personnel groups and this is something that will help set Luton apart from other quarterbacks in the draft. This makes Luton potentially valuable to any offensive scheme at the next level.
Fast forward to the 3:47-mark of the clip below. This is a great example of Luton showcasing his skills here. He’s in gun, or what is known as “pistol” formation with the running back lined up behind him. He has a good, quick play action that causes the linebackers to bite and causes the safety to hesitate. The hesitation by the safety allows Luton’s receiver to get by the safety. Luton stands in the pocket and delivers an accurate ball as he takes a hit.
While Luton still has plenty to work on, like every quarterback does. He has upside in the fact he can provide value for a team in multiple different ways, regardless if it is as a back up or a starter at some point down the road.
