The Terps lost two stellar backs, Javon Leake and Anthony McFarland, to the NFL draft. Lorenzo Harrison, who was also great runner when he wasn’t fighting injuries, medically retired in January.

This attrition leaves Maryland’s previously loaded backfield looking really thin and ripe for anyone who wants carries, which there will probably be a lot of given the gigantic question mark at quarterback (as is tradition for Maryland football).

Enter, Peny Boone, a four-star bruiser of a back from Detroit.

Boone was an early-summer commit who never wavered after the Terps’ disappointing 2019 effort. He is a utility back who is built for power running, but also has huge speed and a natural talent for route running and pass catching, making him a big weapon that the Terps will be sure to use right out of the gate.
