Auburn Football: 3 players poised to break out in 2020
Like Big Kat Bryant, safety Smoke Monday will be relied heavily on for the Auburn Tigers’ defense this upcoming season because of his experience. Monday arrived at Auburn and played immediately as a true freshman.
In 20 games he has played in with the Tigers, Monday has accumulated 35 total tackles, 13 solo tackles and four tackles for loss. This past season was his most impactful so far in his career as he accounted for 20 total tackles, 13 solo tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
It was in the biggest games he shined the brightest.
In the win against No. 5 Alabama, Monday accounted for four solo tackles, one sack and an interception returned for a touchdown.
Monday has been stepping his impact with the Tigers’ defense every year. This upcoming season, he will be asked to start. He will be taking over the free safety position that was left by a graduated Jeremiah Dinson, the team’s leading solo and total tackle.
Both Monday and the new projected strong safety in Jamien Sherwood are not going to struggle to adjust to becoming starters for the Auburn Tigers. While junior cornerback Roger McCreary will not have problems adjusting to life as a new starter, Monday will likely need to provide deep coverage support for the incoming starter at the other cornerback position.
