Denzel Mims was a first-round projected receiver in the 2020 NFL Draft, but he fell all the way to No. 59 overall to the New York Jets.

The Jets had a massive need on the offensive side of the ball with the departures of Robby Anderson and Demaryius Thomas following the 2019 season and they filled it with arguably one of the best receivers in the 2020 NFL Draft class.

Denzel Mims was projected as a first-rounder by many experts leading up to the draft to follow up guys like Henry Ruggs III, CeeDee Lamb, Jerry Jeudy and Justin Jefferson but dropped even further out of the first and deep into the second round to the Jets at No. 59 overall. A receiver with late-first, early-second round talent nearly fell to round three.

The Jets scooped him up before he became an even bigger steal and he should become the franchise’s No. 1 receiver soon enough and Sam Darnold’s favorite target along with Jamison Crowder.

Mims stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 215 pounds so he has solid size and he boosted his stock at the combine with a mind-numbing 4.38 40-yard dash, 38.5-inch vertical and 16 bench reps and without pro days, he didn’t get another chance to prove himself.

The Baylor wide out had nearly 3,000 yards and 28 touchdowns in his four-year Baylor career and his best days are ahead of him.

Grade: A

Let’s be honest, the Jets hit an absolute home run here on a receiver that should have probably gone in the first round over a guy like Jalen Reagor. He graded out extremely high after the NFL combine and had college stats to back it up so New York fans can get ready to watch him grow into that No. 1 role.
