4. Morgan Scalley, Utah (DC)

There is one issue with putting Utah defensive coordinator on this list: people around the Utah program believe he is the heir apparent to current head coach Kyle Whittingham. Of any program in the country, Utah is the dream job for Scalley. He played defensive back at Utah from 2001-04.

Scalley is from Salt Lake City and played for Urban Meyer and Whittingham. He was part of the 2004 Fiesta Bowl-winning team that clobbered Pitt. Everything about him says he will wait for his turn for his dream job.

There is something called “The Muschamp Factor” you have to consider, however. Will Muschamp was hired at Texas to succeed then-head coach Mack Brown. However, the Florida Gators made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Is there an offer Scalley would not turn down? It is not in the Group of Five. He was mentioned for the vacancies at UNLV, Colorado State, New Mexico and Fresno State. When you have the opportunity for your first job to be a Power Five, you wait.

What if USC or another high profile Power Five opportunity comes calling? Is that enough for him to leave? Dollars to doughnuts, his name will be floated for any vacancy, but maybe he’ll just stay home and coach his alma mater.
