Georgia has not had a first-round pick at quarterback since Matthew Stafford in 2009. Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman has a chance to reverse that trend.

Pro Football Focus ranks Newman as the third-best returning quarterback in college football behind only Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields. That is high praise for the quarterback and it has some thinking that he could be the third gunslinger taken in the NFL draft next year after both Lawrence and Fields.

Newman was a very effective starter for the Demon Deacons last season, completing over 60 percent of his passes for 2,668 yards and 26 touchdowns and led Wake to a 7-6 season. He has high expectations in the new offense under former NFL coordinator Todd Monken, where he will be expected to push the ball down the field and be a big play threat.

Newman is also a dual-threat and can add a new dimension that the Bulldogs have not had since DJ Shockley. He will be one of the most watched players in college football this season.
