4. (5) Miami 27, (3) Virginia Tech 7

In what would be the last really important Miami vs. Virginia Tech matchup for several years, the Hurricanes went into Blacksburg and dominated the Hokies.

Virginia Tech would turn the ball over six times and gain only 147 yards in this highly-anticipated matchup of former Big East rivals.

This game carries a lot of importance because it is the only game that Virginia Tech would lose in the regular season. While they would later go on to lose in the first-ever ACC Championship Game against a very average Florida State team, this game exposed the Hokies as being just a fraudulent team.

I also considered this game as important because it would the last time that Miami would win a game against a top five opponent until they played Notre Dame in 2017.

It’s unclear what would have happened if Virginia Tech did win this game, but it had bigger consequences than you probably thought.
