1. (12) Texas 25, (4) Ohio State 22

My first reaction upon stumbling back upon this game when doing research for this edition of college football rewind was that this was a very well-timed home-and-home series between two powerhouses and both times they played, the game had huge implications and lived well up to the hype.

In what would be the only really close game that the Longhorns would play all year until the championship game against USC, Texas had to fight tooth and nail just to come out of Columbus with a victory.

Ohio State kicker Josh Huston would hit five field goals and Buckeye quarterback Troy Smith would find Santonio Holmes for a 35-yard touchdown and the Buckeyes would hold a 22-16 lead in the fourth quarter.

Vince Young would find Limas Sweed for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and the Longhorns would hit the all important extra point to take a 23-22 lead before sacking Smith in the endzone as time expired to give the Longhorns a 25-22 victory.

With a victory here, it’s possible that Ohio State could have made a case to be in the national championship and rob the world of seeing Texas versus USC.
